It wasn’t much of a mind game. more of a strategy i’d think. He knew goku would make his son leave, and then he could get his son one on one since he’d be away from the crowd. by punishing gohan in a situation where his father could do nothing by his own doing, goku’s moral could’veb een shattered. But that didn’t happen :p goku’s spirit is never dead, nor his moral.
doesn’t need to be rushed…it’s just the scripting. Goku has to win.
so somehow, when all 5 of them at full power couldn’t defeat him… 4 of them who had spent the last 30 minutes knocked out giving goku some energy beat broly…
and they didn’t even beat him. then pretty much sucker punched him and teleported away while broly somehow got frozen in crystal.
i don’t think there was that much thought in it. i think it was more “Hey, watch me go destroy your son while you fly around my head like a deranged gnat”
and broly gets stronger by just being legendary

he was frozen in ice and it was on earth. he stayed frozen in ice for the 7 years tht gohan grew up and through the cell games.
